I concur with other reviewers about the Outpost. It felt like I was being served cafeteria food. To their credit, the wait staff is friendly, the food did come out hot, but suffered from pure blandness. Beef stew was plain, pulled pork pork sandwich was too sweet, and the buffalo burger was small.

I want my money back. This place infuriated me, to say the least. I know that this is a tourist town, but prices here border on usary and that's just not ok. $24.00 for a crappy 6 oz. sirloin and 3 butterflied shrimp? Get real. It was 10pm and we were just coming out of the park. This place was open until 11pm and it was busy so we decided to dine. The menu was straightforward: pick your food and nearly everything comes with one trip to the soup and salad bar. If you order a dish that doesn't include it, you can add it on for about $5. We ordered: Pulled BBQ pork sandwich, sirloin steak and shrimp x2, and a kids spaggetti with a cup of soup. We headed over to the salad bar only to find the most pathetic options. Lettuce; carrot and celery sticks; croutons; dressing. Wow--what choices. The food arrived in a fairly decent amount of time. The steaks were dry, tough, and thin. The shrimp were obviously frozen so they couldn't mess that up. The BBQ sandwich was drenched in so much BBQ sauce that it was inedible. And worst of all--the kids spaggetti tasted as if the cook just dumped handfulls of Italian seasoning into the sauce. My poor kid had to eat this?? Total bill: $80. Total money wasted on crappy food: $80 I hate you Outpost. And for the record: money isn't an issue for me if the food is good. But this wasn't $80 quality!

Good solid home style cooking. We were here for dinner after driving all day through Yellowstone. The menu had some very expensive items for the style and decor. But you can choose things that are just under $10 - like the all-you-can-eat salad and soup bar, or the beef stew and corn bread - or just over $10 - like the baked chicken and vegetables - and have a reasonably priced, decent meal. We ended by having the Mini Dessert Cake which happened to be triple layer chocolate cake. It was moist and perfect with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Service was friendly and prompt. Country music playing in the background was just the right touch!

Yes this place is a bit overpriced but we got a very good meal with excellent service. We were seated immediately. Our waiter, Jeph was outstanding. Three of us got the trout which came with salad bar and soup. My won got the beef stew. We all enjoyed out meal. Che found our food to be fresh and hot. This restaurant reminded me of a diner but more expensive. But I love diners.

Just keep walking. This place is a scam. If it had to rely on repeat business, it would have been closed within a month, but since it's a tourist town and they have a great location, they get to prey on innocent people. I ordered the turkey plate and it wasn't much better than a TV dinner... Fine. If it had been $6-7 it would have made sense. But it was $15! My husband's $18 chicken Parmesan featured insanely bland chicken with insanely acidic tomato sauce... He couldn't even eat it. He said a BK chicken parm sandwich would probably have been better. Others in our party were similarly underwhelmed by everything but the check... WOW. It's extortion.

The food was excellent. The hot food was hot and well prepared!! Service was fast and accurate. The staff was cheerful and helpful and attentive. The coffee and water glasses were never empty. I just wish they were close to my home!!

We love this restaurant. Come to west Yellowstone frequently. So friendly. Food is really good. Recommended indeed. Always come for a good breakfast before exploring the park.

Mashed potatoes were excellent, service was very good for a touristy joint . My wife loved her chicken salad... And so did I. Service staff were not overly perfumed which was great. Will be back again.

To start things off we were recommended this from our hotel since they have such a variety of things. We are on a family trip and exploring yellow stone. So we decided it looked okay why not? Well service was bad the 4.50 salad bar was subpar and it was a 1 time trip to the bar anyways. The prices at this place are also outrageous for what you get. I ordered the baked chicken and it was so small and by small I mean the amount of meat that was on the chicken its self. Another one in my party got the pulled pork and it literally looked like throw up on a plate. The meat was grey and disgusting. You know what they say about places that serve all 3 meals! And it was correct. Will not return and I don't recommend this place to anyone. Steer clear.

Just walked out- I never walk out of places. After reading the menu they charge for everything. No way!

Taste: 4.5 Location: 4 Cleanliness: 4 Ambience: 3 Value: 3 Service: 4 * Out of a 5-point scale I came here for their Breakfast and got the Chili over Omelette with Toast and hashbrowns (they might have a name for it but I don't remember). I uploaded the photo on Yelp too so feel free to check it out. It's an amazing Breakfast. I really liked it and this is definitely a good alternative Breakfast place in West Yellowstone besides Running Bear Pancake House which can get really busy in the morning.

This place will only stay alive because it's reliant on the coming and going of tourists. HOWEVER THE SERVICE... The best parts of Outpost were the service and ambiance--but in such a woodsy, touristy place like West Yellowstone ambiance is similar and embedded into almost every business around. Arriving late into the town and hungry for anything, the BF and I stumbled into here 10 minutes to closing and praying they wouldn't get mad for our lateness. Not only did they accommodate us with smiling faces, but a few minutes after we were seated they also sat another family! The dining room was half-filled with travelers. BUT THE FOOD My Country Fried Steak arrived with steamed Carrots, Mashed Potatoes and a Roll. The Meat was very tough and chewy like it had been cooked once, left out, then refried again. The Carrots had most likely lived in a can until an hour ago. Both my dish and my BF's dish were swimming in gravy (very salty at first but somehow calmed down). My BF's Pork Special consisted of thinly, sliced Pork on an open-faced sandwich bread with Mashed Potatoes on the side. The Pork probably lived in a can as well--it looked like Deli Meat--and the Bread was unnecessary because after it was already mushy from all the Gravy. The dish looked more like a Gravy Soup that happened to have Deli Meat and Mashed Potatoes. It all tasted like it looked.

Can't go wrong with this place. The service is great. These guys won't let you sit for more than a minute without being served. Ate here twice for breakfast and once for dinner. Portions are HUGE, the food comes out with 5-8 mins max, and they won't let your cup reach past half empty. The whole place is immaculate. We thought it must be new ... Nope ... Opened in 1980 and I dare you to find a speck of dust or dirt anywhere in the restaurant. Thanks for great dinning during our stay in West Yellowstone, Outpost!

Wish I had read Pan W review. She was right chilli burger was a can of bad chilli, brown gravy is some kind of frozen packaged gel. Tourists trap run away from the place.

Awesome pancakes! We went here for breakfast every day of our stay in West Yellowstone. Very friendly staff, good food and coffee. And amazing pancakes. Did I mention the pancakes? The baked chicken was really good too. I can't understand why other reviewers haven't rated it well. Prices were average compared to restaurants in this town.

Service was top notch, there seemed to be few patrons around for a Friday lunch. The decor is fun and outdoorsy. We enjoyed the BLT and chicken salad sandwiches, the onion rings were served fresh and hot but probably would not order again as they were more expensive than each of the sandwiches.

    (4)
  • Peggy B.

We ordered the French dip and the hot roast beef sandwiches. They both were very good. It was real roast beef, not the sliced deli kind that is on some hot beef sandwiches. Price was reasonable and staff was very good.

This place sucks. First of all, we are in 'Murica, and in this great nation, we get free soda refills. Even at McDonalds you get free soda refills. Unless, of course, you dine at the Outpost. At least their soda is so flat you really don't want a refill anyway, but still...catch up to the 90's! Boyfriend and I each got a burger. I wish we would have just gone to McDonalds or Dairy Queen, because their burgers are better and half the price. By the way, I must be out of my mind because this is the 2nd time in my life I have wasted a meal here. I will not be making that mistake for a third time.

This place is not as bad as others are making it out to be. It's not spectacular, but it's decent enough for a quick stop before Yellowstone. I had the unlimited soup and salad bar for $9.99. They had two soups, vegetable medley and beef barley. Both were good but way too salty. The salad bar had plenty of options, including pickled vegetables, beets, tuna, variety of beans, cottage cheese, potato salad, pasta salad, and pretty much everything else that's standard. My co-worker got a cheese omelette with crispy hash browns and toast. He said it was pretty good, but hard to mess up a cheese omelette. The service was friendly, food came out quickly, and prices were standard for what you'll be finding throughout Yellowstone. Lots of cute shops around to do some after breakfast souvenir shopping.

  • J M.

Yet another overpriced West Yellowstone restaurant. Bison burger was average. Stew was OK. Wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so expensive. What's up with every restaurant in this town only allowing one trip to the salad bar? Are they short on ruffage in Montana? I'm not a salad horder I just find this ridiculous.

Can I give this place a negative star? The food was terrible. I order the chicken teriyaki and it had so much sauce that I could not taste the chicken and the plate came with the salad bar that was terrible. How can u rune a salad bar this place manage to do that and I'm not that picky about food. The charge me $19 for the worst chicken teriyaki I ever had.

  • Steven R.

A solid meh for lunch. Had the turkey and gravy, which was average. Slightly smaller than a generous portion. Fries not too good, had the skins on and limp. One kid had Mac n cheese which looked exactly like kraft but cost over $6. Wife said the grilled chicken salad was really good and 8/10. French dip was rated 8/10. One kid had spaghetti 7/10. Service was good once started but had to wait a few too many minutes before ordering. Came fast from kitchen. I might give a 4/5 but for the prices. Clean and family friendly. We may try it again seems like the bfast reviews are kinder.

This will be my first 1 star review, and hopefully my last. Previous negative reviews were definitely right on the mark. Overpriced food was expected as this place is in a good location inside of a seasonal town. Overpriced only became a concern when the complete lack of quality was grossly obvious. The salad bar was lacking even the most basic of items. The food seemed barely passable as what was described on the menu. We hadn't eaten more than a granola bar each in 8 hrs and would have driven another 8 hrs had this been the only place in town. One of the most disappointing things it that this place remains in business despite the fact that so many other options exist.

We came in for a diner-esque breakfast, and we were quite pleased. The eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns and toast were exactly what we wanted. And the choke cherry jelly I bought for my toast was delightful. The Outpost is nothing fancy, but for breakfast at least, we'd return.

I come to West every year at least a few times, the hubby and I decided to finally try this place. Waited an awkward minute or two for someone to notice us and seat us. No biggie, right? That can totally happen. Sit down, drank some water, took a look at the menu. A bit overpriced, but hey, it's a tourist town so I don't mind. Notice that lemon is $.50 extra. And that refills are $.50 extra. And if you want something "to go", well hey that's $1 extra. And if they see you sharing a plate, that's a $3 charge. Not the most courteous place, but we're hungry and don't plan on sharing food. And definitely not planning on drinking a soda now. Normally I'm very indecisive. So after 5 minutes of menu gazing I knew what I wanted. Usually by this time the waiter/waitress has come by, but not this time. She was nowhere to be seen. Then we see the table next to us was talked into pie for dessert. The table next to them was checked on, then we were ignored. Then a couple minutes later the waitress came around again, only to ignore us again. After 10+ minutes of waiting we left. We dropped by Arby's instead, which was great, good service and saved us some money. And free refills!

We had the hot beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and I had vegetable soup with hot rolls. The sandwich cost $10.50, covered with beef gravy, the sandwich was average, nothing outstanding, but was served very quickly and very hot. No charge for a side of extra gravy. The soup was pretty good, homemade with large chunks of fresh vegetables. The rolls were not hot, not great. Felt the server was nice, she spoke English as a second language and it was difficult for us to understand her. I thought it was okay...would go there again.

Immediately regretted the decision to dine at Outpost once I left. Came there hungry after a day in the park. The menu was pretty typical for the town, steaks, burgers, potatoes, etc. No alcohol options. But the food was AWFUL. No one that I dined with enjoyed their meals. Burgers were obviously frozen from a store, fries were soggy and cold, salad bar was lacking, the stew was cold and forgettable, and the fish and chips was store bought. The shining star of the meal was the waiter, who was friendly and attentive. Not to mention it was all overpriced. Skip this unless you have no other option. Multiple parties left after being seated while we were there. We should have done the same... Service: 7/10 Atmosphere: 6/10 Food: 2/10

We stumbled across this place right across the intersection from the IMAX and just loved our brunch! We ordered Cowboy Omelette (huge fluffy omelette with cheese and chili poured over it) and Blueberry Pancakes (like a piece of pound cake!) and shared the two. Made for a great and filling breakfast, for an easy $20 for two. We came back the next morning too, and our waitress remembered us and our order! She was lovely :) We looked over the menu again, but ultimately decided that the Cowboy Omelette and Blueberry Pancakes were so good, we just wanted to do it again!

We live in West Yellowstone and have since 1972. This has been our breakfast favorite for years. Hot good food. Can always count on fast service. Clean and yummy. A favorite since 1988.

KEEP WALKING past this place. Outside looks inviting but after sitting down, nothing but regrets! Food: Salad bar had wilted lettuce, beets, broccoli, days old carrot & celery sticks & about 6 funky salads like Gramma used to make. Soup was split pea & vegetable barley - the cook (not a chef by any means) LOVES salt because that's all you taste! No fruit of any kind on salad bar. Service: Hostess almost attacks you at the door with a friendly "HI - how many????" as she rings her hands hoping you'll stay (clue...) Waitress had thick Slavic accent & was downright scary! Once she hear we opted for the salad bar, we hardly saw her. Odd features: If you ask for LEMON for your water be prepared to PAY FOR IT!!!! 50 cents for 4 slices of lemon. When we inquired about the 50 cent charge, the hostess snapped "Oh, that's for the lemon, its listed on the menu". Wanna order a soda? Be prepared to pay for refills - 50 cents a refill. Summary: Poor quality food Overpriced tourist trap place Head to Dairy Queen - consistent food at normal prices

This restaurant was a welcome relief in the landscape of the food offered in the Yellowstone area. Our initial thought, on reviewing the menu, was that the prices at least were better or comparable to the park food. Once we started eating, however, we realized the value was much better here. We got the beef plate, the turkey plate, a grilled cheese, chicken tenders, and the beef stew. The grilled cheese had actual cheddar cheese. The beef stew was great. The chicken tenders were real chicken and handmade. The plates were plenty of food that smelled and tasted great. The service was very pleasant and welcoming. All in all, a very good experience. We actually adjusted later travel in the park to be nearer to West Yellowstone, and The Outpost. The second time was just as good as the first.

The place seemed okay at first. We were seated right away and it didn't take long to place our order and get our food. It was a bit pricey, which isn't unusual in a tourist town. The place was pretty empty for breakfast even though the time was before 9 a.m. The food was unremarkable. Ordered the biscuits and gravy and the gravy was thin and clearly from a can or mix. The hash browns were under-cooked and greasy. The meal overall was just a bunch of glop on a plate that didn't play nice with my stomach after we left. The wait staff were disengaged and seemed to be dragging. Overall, not an experience that would bring me back.

You're hungry, you're in the middle of no where, McDonald's is $9+ for all meals and you're grumpy. The remedy: steak. Pricey for the middle of no where but not too bad, around $25 per person. A lot of staring on the part of the patrons aren't too used to seeing yella faces but we got out alive! Whew... We all stuck with steak and potatoes, salad and soup. Super stuffed and a much better deal than expected. Service was nice, decor is very country western, lots of wooden decor and of course the staple bear decorations. Not much else to say about this place and since it's out in West Yellowsone, MT I highly doubt I'll ever go there again :P

Not a lot of choices at 10:30pm. They were open late (I guess until 11pm/midnight). Their entrees were quite pricey: $23 or upwards... and they charge if we were to share the entree with another person: $3 or $5 (which I don't understand). The entree comes with one salad & soup serving. The salad bar was good as it had tuna, cole slaw and bacon bits, which were good. We took a fish dish (tilapia/trout fish) - it was ok, nothing to write home about. If you have other choices, opt for them. Service was good.

Other than not serving any alcohol (Ack, why!!), this is about what I expected from a random restaurant in West Yellowstone - Friendly service, dated atmosphere, & forgettable food. Outpost has an American menu of sandwiches, burgers, pasta, and stews priced at around $10-15. What we had: Beef Stew - Flavorless but filling bowl of thin soup with lots of large chunks of beef, carrot, potato, and onion. Pulled Pork Sandwich - Very generous portion of ultra-sweet BBQ pork, served with crispy hand-cut fries and not--too-mayonnaisey coleslaw. Potentially a good dish, but they need to cut back on the sugar in their BBQ sauce! Spaghetti w/ Meat Sauce - Sorta looked like a big plate of cafeteria spaghetti, and the sauce was noticeably too sweet. Salad Bar - Pretty standard, old-school salad bar, but the Ranch dressing is made in-house and pretty tasty. There are also two soups to choose from, included with a trip to the salad bar. The white bean soup was surprisingly awesome, with lots of herbs and bacony flavor (mmmm, bacon...) Service was friendly, and our waiter in particular was so incredibly gracious and prompt that I'm bumping Outpost up from two stars to three. I doubt this restaurant is much better or worse than other options in West Yellowstone, so if you're just looking for a place to get something in your belly, this might as well be it...

We spent 3 days/nights in West Yellowstone, and after eating here the first morning, we liked it so much that we came back the next day for breakfast. On the first day, I had the soup & salad buffet, which was really good. There were a few different pasta/potato salads as well as your usual salad fixins, and some fresh fruit as well. My boyfriend ordered the buffalo burger and said it was good. The next day, we shared a plate of biscuits and gravy, and their eggs benedict. Both were good. If I'm ever in the area again, I'll stop by for lunch or dinner.

We stayed in West Yellowstone while visiting the park and stumbled upon this place one evening. It was after 10PM so our options were limited. Outpost wsa open and the menu looked decent. We had baked chicken, mashed potatoes, veggies, soup and salad. The food was just ok. Mediocre at best. I wasn't expecting much though. After all, we were in an awfully tiny town. The reason I'm giving this place one star was because of the service. The lady serving us (Teri) was extremely rude. I've never come across someone so unfriendly at a restaurant and felt so unwelcome. I asked another younger lady at the counter what the deal is with Teri. She just apologized, said she's the owner's sister, and "is just like that". For those looking for a nice meal after checking out the park, stay clear of Outpost. You'll be wasting time and money here.

Why the hate, people? This is comfort food, and nothing more. I can be a bit of a food snob, but I can keep it real. Very friendly service. The atmosphere is kind of a fun kitsch with outdoorsy decor. Hubs got the chicken fried steak, I just wanted a burger. No beer served, but the delicious Montana water made up for it. What a concept that I can drink tap water that doesn't taste disgusting. They give you plenty of it! I digress. The burger was fine, char-broiled. I passed on ordering the salmon, because I wasn't sure if it was fresh (there's my snobbishness). Some of the specials were a bit pricey, I thought at $22.00 and up. The salad bar was mayonnaise central, so I passed on that. It was our first day at Yellowstone, we were hungry and this place met our needs. Unpretentious comfort food. There ya go!

This place fucking sucks... They have a horrible variety and the salad bar is shit. Also they charge $3 for each person that you share food with and to take food home it's $1 per item!

I'm feeling generous, three stars! I don't think the staff at this place are as generous as I am. Firstly, no alcohol - yet they still had a line of folks waiting for a table - enough folks that they spilled out of the immediate area of the list into the nearby corridor that lines the stores in the area. However, as I happened to find out by accident, if you get to the top of the list, and you're not in earshot of the quiet hostess, you're out of luck. A couple of list patrons mentioned that folks were waiting in the nearby corridor - the quiet hostess didn't even murmur a sound, she just shrugged. Armed with my insider knowledge, I leaned on the counter next to the till, assured to hear every utterance the quite hostess might ever utter - and we got our table - admittedly ahead of folks in the corridor, but hey, I was hungry by this time! I had the liver and onions (maybe I'm strange, but I do love this dish on occasion) - the liver was OK (not dry, but not as melt in the mouth as it can get) and the onions were tasty. The fries that came with it were "well done" - which seemed to be an re-occurring theme in this town - and the service was just fine. Prices and the quiet hostess attitude would put this at a two star place - food and our server's good service raise this place up to a three star experience for me.

Don't do it, no matter how hungry you are or even if it is the only place open! That's how they hooked us, and I in a moment of low blood sugar delerium, failed to check Yelp first... The prices were what you'd expect in SF, not a three block town in Montana. And the wait staff??? Unbending and uncaring ... We tried to order a BLT for the vegetarian in the group. We asked for the bacon on the side so us meat eaters could enjoy it. The answer?! "no. We can either make you the BLT or not." WTF?! How's that for the customer is always right?! Another person in our party ordered a patty melt. It came out looking extremely scorched. The waitress says oh, I got it a bit burned, set it down and promptly walked away. Classic. The salad bar ...an extra $4.95 if you want to make ONE trip, was mediocre at best. If you don't mind translucent, frozen, slightly rotten lettuce that is. Well we got out of there as fast as we could, dragging our shock and disbelief, and a barely satisfied hunger. Trust me, I learned my lesson about checking reviews first. The saving grace.... The giant waffle cone of Huckleberry ice cream I downed a short time later at the corner Expresso and Coffee stand!

Mainly good for a salad bar that costs more than any chain and has a tenth of the selections.
